This is probably nit-picking, but I'll ask anyway. You seem to imply that your speculations require machines with consciousness. Couldn't everything you fear be brought about by mindless automatons? In fact, how could we even tell whether they were conscious or not? For that matter, how do you know whether I'm conscious or not?
